Yoshida went on to list what went into implementing a new playable character, including things like making new gear, making old gear compatible with a new body, and the tedious task of going through each cutscene to make sure the character has no glitches. In the interview, Yoshida responded to the fan outcry saying, “ The bottom line is that the addition of a race takes quite a lot of cost it’s really quite an undertaking,” and restating what was previously said about staying true to the FF lore.įFXIV Producer Naoki Yoshida at Tokyo Fan Fest, 2019 – Image credit: Game Watch So much so that you couldn’t find a place in all of Eorzea without one, therefore leading the players to ask the question, “ Why start enforcing the lore now?”įollowing up on this feedback, FFXIV producer Naoki Yoshida made an official statement in an interview with Gamespot during the May 2019 Tokyo Fan Fest addressing the challenges that the development team would face, were they to add another playable character. The FF community was quick to point out that this was the same type of lore that the Miqo’te had, yet they were the most popular race in the game. When fans demanded an explanation, the FF creators stated that according to Final Fantasy lore, both the male Viera and female Hrothgar are incredibly rare and are reclusive and isolated in nature.

That’s all well and good, but why not add both genders for each race? In fact, when talk of adding the Viera first arose, that was the only race that the creators had planned on adding, but the players wanted another, more beastly race, so the FF developers having much love for their loyal community, created the Hrothgar, based off of the Ronso, first seen in Final Fantasy X. However, originally, they had no plans of doing so. Naturally, many players assumed that like before, by popular demand, the FFXIV creators would add the missing genders for the Viera and Hrothgar. When the players pleaded for the addition of male Miqo’tes and female Roegadyns, the FFXIV team got busy right away, listening to the community’s feedback and bringing these two gender options in the Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn relaunch. After a previous announcement stating that these two races would likely be the last ones added to the game, this really took players by surprise and set the FF community into a panic, leaving them afraid that they would never get the chance to play as the bunny boy, or lioness, of their dreams.įFXIV Original Races and Genders – Image credit: Square Enix This came with the announcement that just like they had done in the initial release of the game with the Miqo’te and Roegadyn races, the new Viera and the Hrothgar races would also be gender locked. Shortly before the release of Shadowbringers in July 2019, FFXIV creators were already getting a lot of heat from the Final Fantasy community. The reasons stem anywhere from the original Final Fantasy lore, to the high costs of implementing a new character, and even to the suspicion of stereotypes. You may be wondering why these genders weren’t present with the original addition of their respective races, to begin with. Since the addition of the female Viera and Male Hrothgar with the Shadowbringers expansion, players have taken to social media voicing their disappointment with the addition of yet another group of gender-locked races. Instead, Endwalker will bring two highly anticipated new genders to already existing races: The male Viera and the female Hrothgar. We have all come to expect a new race with each expansion, yet this time, there will be no new races added. It’s almost here! Endwalker, the next Final Fantasy 14 expansion, is scheduled to be released on November 23, 2021, bringing some new additions to the game.
